Defense Department Report Concludes Defense Secretary Placed Military Personnel in Danger with Signal Chat.

A long-awaited Department of Defense review has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by disclosing classified intelligence in a private Signal group, according to a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Incident

The chat group in dispute contained particulars about a scheduled air attack in Yemen against Houthi militants. This chat came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other individuals in the group reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not authorized for transmitting classified information.

Serious Threat to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

However, the report acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to downgrade the information he shared, though it was not specified whether he formally did so.

Secretary's Response

The source indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed information that would not have risked lives or compromised the operation. He further stated that he possessed the authority to declassify material and considered the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been shared with lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is anticipated to be released in the coming days.
